H2O intrusion or foundation issues (settlement and/or heave resulting from expansive soil) are the most common causes of sticking doors and windows. Humidity causes the wood to swell and bulge up against the frame, increasing friction.
Is it always the case that sticking doors indicate a problem with the foundation?
Upheaving foundations are characterized by squeaking doors and windows , as well as warped and twisted hallways. If you look around in your crawl space, you may notice large cracks in the walls and floor of the foundation that need to be repaired.
What is the source of the window sticking?
Window sticking is frequently caused by humidity, especially if your windows are made of wood or have wooden components. If you notice that your windows stick only during the hot summer months, it is likely that humidity is to blame.
What is causing my windows to stick?
The tracks may have become clogged with dust, dirt, and pollen over time, which is a common cause of sticking windows. Cleaning the accumulated debris and lubricating the tracks on your window sashes will restore their ability to glide open and closed smoothly.
What is the best way to fix a sticky window?
This has been corrected by lubricating the tracks with regular Vaseline, which I have found to be the most effective method. First, clean the tracks of any dust or debris with a paper towel before dipping a paper towel into the Vaseline. Lift the sash as high as possible and use a light coat of paint to coat the lower tracks of the window. To finish up the track on the upper track, close the window and repeat the process on the lower track.
What is the best way to fix a window that won't close completely?
If the window has become misaligned as a result of a shifting foundation, simply lifting and pushing the window and the area around the lock may be sufficient to restore it to its original position. Alternatively, other quick fixes, such as lubricating or cleaning the sliding track, may be all that is required.
