The George Peabody Library, dubbed the "Cathedral of Books" in Baltimore, is routinely listed among the world's most beautiful libraries.
The library houses 300,000 volumes, the majority of which date from the nineteenth century, with a focus on religion, British art, architecture, topography, and history; American history, biography, and literature; Romance languages and literature; science and technology history; and geography, exploration, and travel.
George and his brothers were responsible for financially supporting their mother and sisters. This began a life of hard work importing wholesale dry goods in Baltimore and climbing the corporate ladder until he founded George Peabody & Co, a merchant bank, and made his fortune.
