Fort Howard was a military installation on the North Point peninsula overlooking the Patapsco River's main channel, which leads into Baltimore's harbor. Although it was militarily significant since the early 1800s, its surviving elements and name date from the Spanish–American War.
The Haunted Dungeons, which have been open for more than 30 years, combine spooks and scares with some true-to-life harrowing history: many soldiers died here during the War of 1812, and Fort Howard was used for Vietnam War training.
Two years later, Fort Howard was retaken. The fort was abandoned once more in 1841, when the garrison was relocated to Florida during the Seminole Wars, and it was deactivated in 1853. The fort's buildings fell into disrepair when it was closed.
It was used as an auxiliary training facility for the United States Army in the 1960s. Fort Holabird near Dundalk is home to the U.S. Army Intelligence School. During the Vietnam War, a typical Vietnamese village was created there to train Special Forces ("green Berets") for counterinsurgency operations. The settlement had tunnels that looked authentic.
